When One (Gorgeous) Wedding Gown is Not Enough

Wedding Reception Dress

We’re loving the reception dress! The trend began about ten years ago when wedding gowns became more opulent, with bigger ball gown skirts and intricate beading. While there is nothing more lovely than beautiful detail on a wedding gown, these features tended to weigh a Bride down.

We went to wedding dress expert Donna Holland, owner of Party Dress Express, to get the full story on reception dresses. First, we were curious, what does a reception dress look like?  She laughed, “That’s a very good question. The same dress in my store can be one Bride's destination wedding dress and it can also be another's reception dress! The simplest answer is a reception wedding dress is going to be simpler than the gown the Bride wore at her ceremony. A reception dress has functionality - our Brides love them because they can easily move around their reception in them and they are great for dancing!”

Holland showed us some of the most popular reception dresses at her store. Now all you have to do is decide between short or long!

And when you just can’t decide between a short reception dress and a long reception dress, Holland tells us, “You can have it all!”  These hi-lo reception dresses are for the Bride who knows exactly what she wants on her wedding day.  (We’re guessing it’s to stand out, just like she should!)

Holland says at Party Dress Express about 70% of the Brides buy a reception dress. We had to ask Ms. Holland, when does a Bride know if she needs a reception dress? “I know my Brides really want to enjoy their reception. They have worked so hard to have everything perfect and now they deserve to really relax and enjoy it. In their minds, they are going from something formal and lovely - their ceremony to something celebratory and upbeat - the reception. That often requires a second outfit to reflect the change of mood and style. Plus it's so much easier to kick up your heels and dance in your reception dress!”
